Project Bionics is a collaborative history project of ASAIO, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History and the National Library of Medicine’s History of Medicine Division. From its inception in 1998, the project continues to document the history of artificial organ developments, focusing on the people, ideas and devices instrumental in the innovation and realization of artificial organs. Activities include:
Identifying historical material and artifacts
Facilitating the deposit of devices and scientific papers of historical significance into the appropriate repositories for posterity
Conducting interviews with the pioneers and innovative scientists, engineers, and clinicians in the field
Conducting surveys and collecting narratives and commentaries of patients, leading scientists, and practitioners involved in the application of artificial organ technology
